The Dragons get the final game of the regular season underway kicking in to Scarlets territory at Principality Stadium for the first game of Judgement Day VI.
The pre-match drama and excitement makes way for the teams with Scarlets needing a bonus point victory over the Men of Gwent to secure a home game in next week’s play-offs.
Scarlets put the Dragons under pressure early on with long-range kicks to touch. Scarlets line-outs deep in Dragons territory sees the referee play advantage in our favour. At the second time of asking the Scarlets pack put their best foot forward with hooker Ryan Elias crossing for first try. Leigh Halfpenny adds the conversion making it 7-0 after the opening five minutes.
After quarter of an hour Scarlets look like they may sore a second try after a Rhys Patchell kick to the corner. Scarlets take a scrum penalty on the ten metre line after a Dragons put in. A clear out by Scarlets off the ball hands possession back to Dragons and they kick away. They get a run downfield and are within Scarlets’ 22 for the first time. Scarlets regain possession however and clear out of danger. Dragons don’t waste the opportunity however and get a penalty through the boot of outside half Arwel Robson to get their scoreboard ticking over.
After a prolonged period of pressure from the Scarlets they eventually cross for a second try after a great attacking phase. Patchell initially makes a break in midfield towards the whitewash but loses the ball in contact. The ball is kiked downfield by Dragons but Scarlets are quikly back in possession and come again. This time the ball is passed along the line and Leigh Halfpenny scores in the corner. Referee heads upstairs once again and this time TMO confirms no try. A knock on at the base of the ruck by Gareth Davies negates the try.
Half time: 3-7
Scarlets get the second half underway in a positive fashion putting the Dragons under pressure in their own 22. Dragons are offside, they hand Scarlets a scrum under the posts. Dragons are penalised once again for turning the scrum. They make changes with Chris Coleman on for Dan Suter.
After the fourth time of asking a yellow card is produced. Coleman is sent to the bin. Suter returns to the field for the scrum and another penalty against Dragons sees Scarlets awarded a penalty try.
Scarlets come back on the attack from the restart. A solid attacking phase sees the ball worked through the hands. James Davies throws a pass through the backdoor, Steff Evans is alert, he weaves his way back inside and passes to Steve Cummins. The second row makes use of his long legs and pumps his way into Dragons’ 22. Tadhg Beirne crosses for the region’s third try. Halfpenny’s kick hits the upright.
Scarlets secure the all-important fourth bonus point try with 55 minutes on the clock as Beirne stretches across the whitewash for his second of the afternoon! Halfpenny adds the conversion but the Scarlets have secured a home draw in next weekend’s play-offs.
The Dragons get a try on the board just after the hour mark with winger Jared Rosser flying in down the far wing. We head to TMO to check for grounding as James Davies puts in a monumental timely tackle on him but the try is awarded. No conversion.
With just over five minutes remaining, and after a sustained period of pressure in Dragons’ 22, winger Steff Evans shows his dancing feet and darts to the line crossing for a fifth Scarlets try. Halfpenny adds the conversion.
Final score: 8-33
The victory sees Scarlets through to the Guinness PRO14 play-offs and will welcome Cheetahs to Parc y Scarlets next weekend, date and time to be confirmed.
