New deal for Elias

Scarlets and Wales hooker Ryan Elias has penned a new deal with the Scarlets

Carmarthen born Elias developed through the age grade ranks at the Scarlets before being awarded a place in the Scarlets Academy.

The Academy graduate made his first regional appearance in November 2013 against Saracens in the Anglo-Welsh Cup before being awarded a development contract ahead of the 2014-15 season.

Injuries to hookers Ken Owens and Emyr Phillips thrust Elias into the limelight in his first professional season facing Toulon in the European Rugby Champions Cup.

22-year-old Elias has made 66 appearances to date scoring three tries.

Commenting on the news head coach Wayne Pivac said; “We are delighted to have re-signed Ryan. He’s another of the many young talents who’ve come through the development pathway at the region.

“He’s developed into an all round player, he possesses great throwing skills and is very strong in the contact area.

“Ryan has amassed a huge amount of experience at a very young age and at only 22 years of age has a very big future ahead of him in the game and we’re looking forward to seeing his continued development.”

Jon Daniels, Scarlets General Manager of Rugby, said; “Our development pathway is something that we work particularly hard at and take great pride in. The pathway, and Scarlets Academy, has produced extremely talented players over the years who have gone on not only to represent the region but Wales and British & Irish Lions.

“Ryan is one of a group of talented homegrown players making their mark on the region and is the latest to put pen to paper on a new deal.”

Ryan Elias added; “Playing for the Scarlets is something I’ve wanted to do since I was young and it’s an honour to pull on the jersey. I’m really happy to have extended my contract with the Scarlets and I look forward to continuing my development.”
